Seattle Converting Two Lanes of I5 for Bike Use Amid Viaduct Closure
Late Friday afternoon Seattle DOT announced a plan to curb anticipated traffic issues caused by the viaduct closure. The plan is to shutdown two lanes of I5 sometime next week and begin converting them for bicycle use. We contacted a representative for SDOT who said, "Yeah, basically the idea is that bikes are much smaller than cars. We can fit way more bikes on the freeway than cars, so this should help absorb some of the stress. We hope to have the bike lanes open at least by the time the tunnel opens." It's currently unclear how SDOT plans to identify the new bike lanes to avoid confusion between cyclists and automobile drivers.
